Say goodbye to Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, and other Sony MMOs

Time to say goodbye to some Sony free-to-play MMOs. Sony Online Entertainment has said it will be closing Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Wizardry Online. It’s a sudden, unexpected decision and means that all four will be disappearing between March and July, 2014. Why? Well, largely because people don’t play them anymore.

Lack of interest is the reason for the Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes closures. A Sony representative told Kotaku that all three no longer have the pull they once did. The player population has been decreasing over the years, and it’s just a case of these things happening. However, Sony did not offer a reason for the shutting down of Wizardry Online, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was for similar reasons. Wizardry isn’t exactly the most popular series around.

For now, anyone involved in any of these MMOs should enjoy the time they have left. Both Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, arguably the two most popular of the games, will be closing on March 31, 2014. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Wizardry Online get a bit of a reprieve, and won’t be closing until July 31, 2014. The latter two have still been receiving updates, so perhaps Sony wanted to give players a chance to enjoy them before closing the games’ doors.

If you once played any of these games, maybe consider going on one last quest before their doors close forever. If you haven’t, don’t bother giving them a try now. No sense in getting invested when the game’s on its last legs. I’d give Free Realms one last chance myself, but it’s been far too long since I last played and I really don’t think it’s worth it to go to the trouble of installing the PS3 version to say goodbye.
